STRUCTURE-RELATED QUESTIONS

+ How will the heights of the new structures compare to the existing structures?

The new structures will vary in height, depending on a multitude of factors, including the natural topography of the land. On average, the new structures will be 10 feet taller than existing structures.

+ What will the structures be made of, and what color will they be?

The structures will be made from galvanized steel and have a gray finish.

+ What is the diameter of the monopoles and their bases? What is the length of the arms?

For the most common pole design: the base diameter will be a little more than 3.5 feet; the top arms will be approximately 17 feet long on one side and 24 feet long on the other (total of 41 feet across); the bottom arms will be approximately 18 feet long on one side and 30 feet long on the other (total of 48 feet across).

+ Will the new structures be located in the same places as the existing structures?

The new structures will be located in close proximity to existing structures, but not in the exact same footprint. The existing structures will remain standing until the new structures are erected. Town-by-town maps showing the approximate location of new structures compared to existing structures can be viewed by clicking on your town here. Structure locations will be finalized in the coming months as part of the Plan and Profile drawings that accompany the Environmental Management and Construction Plan (EM&CP) filing(s).

+ Will there be lights or marker balls on the structures or lines for the protection of aircraft?

In the small number of instances where our transmission structures will be in close proximity to an airfield, we will adhere to all safety requirements of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

+ Will changes be made to the Blue Stores Substation? Will this work improve the reliability of the local distribution line?

The Blue Stores Substation will be upgraded along the corridor at the rear of the property to accommodate new equipment for the transmission line work. Plans for this work are now under development, with the design being done by National Grid. All work on the NYES project will help improve reliability, but it is at the transmission level, not distribution level. For more information on local reliability relating to the Blue Stores Substation, please contact National Grid here.

+ Could the new Van Wagner Capacitor Bank Station be built at the Pleasant Valley Substation instead?

We looked at a variety of potential locations for the capacitor bank station, including on the Pleasant Valley Substation site, but determined that the Van Wagner Road property was the best option available.
